Volunteer Testimonial: For the past five-plus years, I have been grateful that my company, HSB, and my manager, Lee Fincher, have afforded me the opportunity to actively engage in industry events/organizations such as PAMIC.
My participation in the PAMIC Educational Committee has provided me with the opportunity to learn firsthand about the needs of the member mutual companies through the eyes of their leaders. It is great to see the process play out. Idea gathering, debating the pros/cons of various subjects and finding the right speaker to make a presentation on a subject brings out the passion of committee members. Our meetings are interactive and one can feel the enthusiasm the whole group shares as we work to find the best speakers for our fellow PAMIC members.
As an audience member I really enjoy hearing the presentations. The details delivered by the informative speakers help me to understand emerging industry risks in greater detail. Topics relevant to the success of all PAMIC members and may not be the focus of our daily lives (state-specific legislation, working with colleagues of all ages and protecting your identity spring to mind) have all been well packaged and delivered by experts on the subject matter.
On a personal note, the most important thing I have taken from serving on this committee over the last five years is the personal relationships I have developed. It is nice to be able to take a step back and just spend time with people when we are away from our everyday jobs to focus our energy on providing interesting programs for the membership. PAMIC has been, is now, and will always be made up of great people. I have been proud to work with many of them on this committee and look forward to many more good years.
If you are not already participating on a PAMIC committee and want to find out more please feel free to send me an e-mail or give me a call!
April 2020: Claims Committee Volunteer Spotlight
Committee Volunteer: Scott Rynby, Esq., Chair Insurance Coverage & Extra-Contractual Liability Group, Morgan & Akins
PAMIC features Scott Rybny of Morgan & Akins in the Claims Committee Volunteer Spotlight for the month of April. Scott has been an important contributor to PAMIC’s variety of member benefits including webinars, quarterly Pulse publications, and of course the annual Claims Summit. Scott Rybny became involved in PAMIC almost ten years ago as while still a young attorney. Now a veteran and staunch advocate for insurers with 20 years of experience under his belt, Scott’s insurance coverage practice has grown from Pennsylvania into New Jersey and New York. But he never forgot the relationships he developed here at PAMIC, assisting with the Claims Committee, Convention Committee, submitting articles, presenting webinars and speaking at various PAMIC events on important first and third-party coverage issues. Scott is now the chair of the insurance coverage and extracontractual liability practice group at Morgan & Akins.
Company Info: Scott’s current firm, which has its roots in Nashville, TN has expanded significantly since its inception and now represents insurers and their insureds in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama and Mississippi.
Morgan & Akins’ practice is centered on civil litigation, real estate, and business law matters with a primary focus on insurance defense. For years, our attorneys have successfully defended national retailers and insurers in matters involving workers’ compensation claims, premises liability, and general liability matters. In addition to the firm’s civil litigation practice, Nick Akins and Partner Jonathan Harris are very involved in the Nashville real estate market and routinely handle residential and commercial real estate transactions. Their real estate experience ranges from standard residential closings to multi-million dollar commercial property loan restructuring and complex land trust transactions.
Volunteer Testimonial: “Of all the insurance industry associations, I believe PAMIC offers the most for its members. I learned early on that PAMIC understands that unique role that mutual insurance companies play in the marketplace. The organization works hard to cultivate relationships between the member companies – which in turn allows the member companies to grow and expand in ways that many outside the organization cannot. Building those business and personal relationships has not only helped me grow personally, but also professionally, giving me greater insight into the world of insurance. Each year it is a struggle for me to choose which committee to volunteer for as I thoroughly enjoyed my time working on each of the committees over the years.”
September 2020 Financial Management Committee Spotlight
Committee Volunteer: Mr. Anthony Latini, CFA, Managing Director, Boenning & Scattergood
This month PAMIC features Anthony Latini, Managing Director at Boenning & Scattergood for September’s Committee Member Spotlight! Tony has been a consistent and extremely involved volunteer on the Financial Management Committee and is always willing to share his expert knowledge with the PAMIC membership. Volunteers like Tony are the reason for PAMIC’s continued success!
Personal and Professional Background:
Mr. Latini has over 30 years of experience providing corporate finance and investment banking services to middle-market and large corporate clients. He leads the firm’s insurance industry effort and focuses on merger & acquisition advisory services and capital offerings. His merger & acquisition transaction experience includes approximately $2 billion in transaction value and he has assisted in raising in excess of $1 billion in debt and junior capital. Tony has significant experience with financial services modernization, having worked with insurance companies, banks and agencies since segments of the industry began to converge in the late 1990s. Prior to joining Boenning & Scattergood, Mr. Latini was Managing Director of Curtis Financial Group’s financial services industry group. He has also held positions at Berwind Financial L.P., a regional investment bank, Evans & Company, Inc., an equity buyout group, and CoreStates Financial Corp, a superregional commercial and investment banking company. In his professional capacity, Tony has authored and delivered numerous presentations for industry conferences, corporate planning sessions, trade associations, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and the Federal Reserve Bank on topics such as mergers & acquisitions, raising capital, and valuations, and has been quoted in CFO Magazine, Investment Dealers Digest, Mergers and Corporate Policy, American Banker and National Underwriter. Mr. Latini received his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics with a concentration in Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and the FINRA Series 7, 24, 63, and 79 licenses. He currently serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees at Neumann University and is an active board member of the Philadelphia Fire Department Historical Corporation. Previously, Tony was Chairman of the Archmere Academy Board of Trustees and a Trustee of the Archmere Trust.
Boenning & Scattergood:
Boenning & Scattergood is dedicated to exceeding the expectations of it’s clients by delivering financial solutions alongside our longstanding traditions of integrity, expertise and commitment to client service. Established in 1914, Boenning & Scattergood, Inc. is one of the oldest independent securities, asset management and investment banking firms in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest Regions. Professionals at our firm provide individual investors, corporate and municipal clients and institutions a full complement of financial services including retail brokerage, equity research, equity and fixed income sales and trading, investment banking, public finance, equity option strategy and asset management. One of the hallmarks of Boenning & Scattergood is the way in which they conduct business. It is a style they believe helps them deliver maximum success for their clients: opportunistic, collaborative and flexible. Larger firms may often operate like an enormous tanker, unable to respond quickly or make changes in direction easily. Layers of management can stifle creativity and slow responsiveness. Boenning & Scattergood, on the other hand, is a boutique firm. They view this as a distinct advantage for their clients because they are nimble in a way that allows them to quickly seize opportunities on their client’s behalf.
Tony’s Testimonial: “PAMIC Memories”
“There are so many memories from the past 20 or 25 years. Many of them indicate why PAMIC means so much to me professionally and personally.
My introduction to insurance industry associations started with PAMIC back in the 1990s. Larry Kauffman was the leader at the time and was a wonderful mentor and guide to the industry. I learned a lot from him and from those conferences and seminars. Some of the friends and connections I made then are still going strong 20+ years later.
A few years after joining PAMIC I learned that the annual convention was a family event (unlike so many other trade associations). I brought my wife and young daughter to the convention. What an experience! So many of the members helped our young family out. One night in particular, I remember several company CEOs putting down their dinners and helping us navigate the dinner buffet, balancing plates of food while trying to keep tabs on our toddler! I have another memory of Greg Grace, may he rest in peace, sponsoring and planning “The PAMIC Attack'' 5K runs each year at the annual convention. I still have some of the T-shirts from those days. What a fun and kind man!
Speaking about what a welcoming group this is, when I chaired the financial management committee, I thought I was simply “doing my job” and “what was expected.” PAMIC’s leadership saw it differently. They appreciated the effort. The sincere thank you’s from the leadership group were really appreciated and so unexpected. I realized what a special place PAMIC was.
PAMIC is an organization that provides a significant amount of industry knowledge to its members, while also facilitating wonderful networking opportunities, and this results in members building friendships. I can't think of a group that has helped me develop so many great business relationships (and so many of those relationships turned into friendships). The member companies as well as the associate members and the PAMIC staff approach relationships in the same manner. People come first. It’s not just the bottom line.”
