An Overview of the Ethical Implications of Social Media for Lawyers

Often social media plays a critical role in civil, criminal, family, and other legal practice areas. For lawyers, it is important to understand Facebook, Linked In, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms. This program will exam the capabilities and usefulness of the most popular social media tools, along with the hazards and ethical consideration these tools can add to your legal matters.

· Understanding the risks your client’s use of social media provides.

CLE 1: Ethics 101: Understanding Multi-jurisdictional Practice & Unauthorized Practice of Law
Todd Scott, Vice President of Risk Management, Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company
Todd Scott is the Vice President of Risk Management for Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company. He is a frequent author and guest lecturer on the topics of malpractice, ethics, and practice management systems. Much of his duties include helping lawyers select and implement software systems appropriate to their particular practice. Mr. Scott had previously served as Attorney/Claims Representative for MLM, and was the head of their technology subsidiary, Mutual Software. Todd is also an adjunct professor in the Legal Studies Department at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is a graduate of Hamline University School of Law and is a member of the American Bar Association, the Nebraska State Bar Association, and the Minnesota State Bar Association, where he has served as past Chair of the Practice Management & Marketing Section.
Christopher A. Grgurich, Trial Attorney
Christopher A. Grgurich is a trial attorney in Minneapolis, Minnesotawhere he tries cases in court and arbitration involving the sale of securities, fraud, breach of contract and fiduciary duty, employment and shareholder disputes, and other complex and general business litigation matters. Chris’ business background augments his keen understanding of finance and the law, which he leverages in also helping his clients respond to state, FINRA, and Securities Exchange Commission and other regulatory inquiries and investigations. Chris also assists colleagues in meeting their professional and ethical obligations under the Rules of Professional Conduct that govern attorney conduct and the practice of law. Chris also represents lawyers involved in disciplinary and admissions-related matters.

Jeff Brien, Regional Sales Director for PA, Claim Attorney, Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company
Jeff Brien is a graduate of Boston College and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. In 2019, he joined Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company as the Regional Sales Director for Pennsylvania, as well as a Claim Attorney. Prior to joining MLM, Jeff maintained a diverse civil practice including the defense of doctors, lawyers, and other professionals. From 2011 through 2016, he was chosen as a Pennsylvania Rising Star.
Shaun Jamison, JD PhD, Assistant Director of Library Services and
Professor of Law at Concord Law School Kaplan University
Shaun Jamison is Assistant Director of Library Services and Professor of Law at Concord Law School Kaplan University. He also coordinates the design and implementation of electives at Concord Law School. Dr. Jamison formerly worked for Thomson-West, starting as a reference attorney managing inside account managers and Westlaw telephone trainers. Prior to joining Thomson-West, Dr. Jamison was a solo practitioner. Dr. Jamison earned the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award and enjoys presenting at CLEs. He has served on numerous committees including Kaplan University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). At the Minnesota State Bar Association he served as the Chair of the Practice Management Section as well as co-chair for focus groups for the 2011 Self-Audit for Gender Equity and Diversity (SAGE). In addition to being a fan of his daughters' sports of swimming and volleyball, he regularly competes in triathlons and in 2013 completed Ironman Wisconsin.
